Orvis' new Mirage reels give anglers a lightweight design machined from solid-aluminum bar stock, a sealed drag capable of generating more than 15 pounds of pressure and true large-arbor performance — at a price that is hundreds of dollars less than other reels. The Mirage series was developed for larger fish and is offered in four models designed for 7- to 15-weight lines. The reels' maintenance-free floating carbon-disc drag system has been in development for two years, and Orvis says the carbon plates' keyed edges cannot warp or round off, ensuring stability and security. MSRP ranges from $425 to $495. www.orvis.com

Hydros are constructed with hard chrome snake guides and sold with a Cordura-covered plastic case for travel.

Touted by Orvis as the workingman's Helios, the company's new Hydros line of saltwater fly rods offers many of the same excellent features as its predecessor for a slightly more reasonable price. Built with the same patent-pending technology as the Helios rods, the new Hydros are slightly heavier, though still as light or lighter than many other premium saltwater fly rods. With rich blue blanks and attractive brushed-aluminum reel seats, Hydros are constructed with hard chrome snake guides and sold with a Cordura-covered plastic case for travel. All rods are four-piece in design and available from 3-weight to 12-weight. MSRP is $525.
